Washington DC to Los Angeles
About Our DC to Los Angeles Moving Company
Los Angeles is the longest run we make, and the one where the map misleads you. About 2,669 miles separate a DC loading dock from a Los Angeles curb, and a routing app calls that roughly 39 hours of driving. Federal hours-of-service rules cap a driver at 11 hours behind the wheel inside a 14-hour window, with 10 hours off before the next. Run that arithmetic and the drive by itself takes four to six days, before anyone picks up a box.
That gap explains why quotes on this lane look so strange side by side. Companies advertising the route promise delivery in anywhere from three days to twenty-one. Three days needs two drivers trading the wheel. Twenty-one days means your furniture shares a trailer and leaves when the rest of the load fills. We run it a third way: your shipment gets its own truck, the same crew handles both ends, and you get a delivery date before you sign.
The routing matters too. Our default is I-64 west onto I-40, across Nashville, Amarillo, Albuquerque and Flagstaff, then I-15 down through Cajon Pass into the basin. Flagstaff sits near 7,000 feet and averages just over 90 inches of snow between October and May. Caltrans lists Cajon Pass as a chain-control route, and above 6,500 pounds there is no snow-tire exemption: when controls go up, chains go on, or a screening checkpoint turns you back down the hill. The northern line through Colorado runs about 90 miles longer and adds its own chain-carriage mandate from September through May, so we keep it for summer.
AT Movers is family run out of Rockville, Maryland. We hold USDOT #3455533 and MC #1126253 for interstate household goods, which you can look up on the FMCSA company snapshot, and we work a fleet of 26-foot box trucks and sprinter crews rather than handing the miles to whoever bids lowest. Our DC to Las Vegas page covers the same I-15 approach from the far side of the pass, and the other lanes sit on the long-distance hub.

Estimates for a dedicated truck on this lane, not binding quotes. Your flat rate is set once we have inventoried the shipment and checked access at both ends.

What’s Included
What’s Included — and How You’re Protected
An experienced W-2 crew and a dedicated 26-ft truck — your shipment never shares a trailer or waits for a freight consolidation window. You book us, you get us.
Moving blankets, shrink wrap, floor and door-frame protection, plus disassembly and reassembly of furniture that needs it — all part of the rate, not add-ons.
Every road-related charge is built into your flat rate: fuel, mileage, and all tolls along the corridor.
Fuel, mileage and tolls are inside your flat rate. Curb permits on the Los Angeles end are quoted separately, because LADOT prices sign posting at actual cost per job rather than from a published fee.
AT Movers operates under USDOT #3455533 · MC #1126253 with full interstate household-goods authority — verify us on the FMCSA carrier snapshot or the FMCSA’s Protect Your Move mover search. We carry $2 million in general liability, the level strict buildings ask for on certificates of insurance.
Federal law gives you two options on every interstate move: Released-Value Protection (60¢ per pound per article) is included at no charge, and Full-Value Protection is available for the declared value of your shipment. We walk you through both in writing before move day, along with the FMCSA’s “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move” booklet every interstate mover is required to provide.
Closing dates don’t line up? We can hold your shipment securely between homes — ask your coordinator about short-term storage when you book.

Route Logistics
Permits, Parking & Building Access
Loading in DC, Maryland & Virginia
If your DC street needs reserved curb space, the District requires an Emergency No Parking permit from DDOT — $50 through the TOPS portal, with signs posted 72 hours ahead on unmetered blocks (24 hours on metered ones). We tell you exactly what to order and when, or coordinate the signage with your building.

Delivering in Los Angeles
Curb space is the hard part of a Los Angeles delivery, and the rules are scattered.
Start with the truck. Under LAMC 80.69.4, a vehicle over 22 feet long or 84 inches tall cannot park between 2 and 6 a.m. on a posted street, and a 26-foot truck is past both. Residents can buy a $10-per-day exemption for their own block, capped at three days, which reserves them nothing.
LADOT will not quote a sign price online. The city charges the actual cost of the work under LAMC 80.08.7, against a schedule it keeps internally, so any dollar figure on a mover’s blog is a guess. The number that works is Special Traffic Control, (213) 485-2298.
Half the metro is not the City of Los Angeles. Santa Monica charges $107.75 plus $2.04 a sign and sends police to inspect the posting first. Beverly Hills runs moving-van signs through its police traffic bureau at $8.10 each, two minimum, posted 72 hours ahead. Pasadena wants a separate permit ten days out for anything 26 feet or longer. We work out who owns your address before committing to a date.
Two other things can cancel a move day. Street sweeping is posted across more than 4,700 curb miles and actively ticketed. On a declared Red Flag day, parking is banned on 1,700-plus signed segments in the hillside fire zones and cars get towed, which matters if you are landing in Hollywood Hills, Brentwood or Pacific Palisades during Santa Ana season.
On certificates of insurance, LA has no citywide norm like New York’s. Limits get set building by building, so send us your management company’s requirement and we file to it.
Why Choose AT Movers for a DC to Los Angeles Move
Your Own Truck, Start to Finish
Your shipment gets a dedicated truck and the same crew at both ends. It stays loaded the whole way instead of waiting in a yard for a trailer to fill.
Mountain Passes Planned in Advance
Flagstaff sits near 7,000 feet, and Cajon Pass is a posted chain-control route with no snow-tire exemption for a loaded truck. We route and time around it from October through May.
Set Up for the California Run
Out-of-state trucks over 14,000 lbs owe CARB Clean Truck Check reporting before they drive California roads. Compliance sits with the carrier, and we sort ours out well ahead of your delivery date.
We Know Who Owns Your Curb
Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Pasadena and the City of LA each post moving signs differently. We find out which agency covers your street before we commit to a delivery date.
Family-Owned, One Coordinator
You book us and you get us: our trucks, our crews, and one person handling the move from the quote through the unload.
Licensed Interstate Carrier
USDOT #3455533 and MC #1126253, with $2M general liability. Verifiable on the FMCSA register before you pay a deposit.

How It Works
How Your DC to Los Angeles Move Will Go
What a cross-country move on this lane looks like.

Planning & Paperwork
Start with a quote online or by phone at (240) 701-5507. A coordinator walks your inventory by video, sets a flat rate, then works backwards from the delivery end, because Los Angeles is where the scheduling constraints sit. We confirm which agency posts signs at your destination, whether the street is one a 26-foot truck can turn onto, and what your building wants on its certificate of insurance. Book four to six weeks ahead off-peak, six to eight for summer or month-end.

Packing & Loading
On move-day morning the crew arrives inside your DC window with the curb already reserved, since District signs go up 72 hours ahead in residential zones. Furniture gets blankets and shrink wrap, floors and door frames get protection, anything that needs taking apart comes apart, and every item is inventoried onto the truck. This is a dedicated load, so it stays on the same truck the whole way instead of being cross-docked or handed to another carrier mid-country.

Transit & Delivery
Then the truck drives, four to six days of legal wheel time across I-40, with your coordinator checking in along the way. Winter runs get watched for chain controls at Flagstaff and Cajon Pass, and we will reroute or wait rather than gamble a loaded truck on a closed pass. On arrival the same crew unloads, reassembles what came apart, and places boxes by room label. If your street is one the truck cannot make, we arrange the shuttle relay before move day.
The Other Direction
Moving from Los Angeles to DC?
We quote Los Angeles to DC on the same flat-rate basis, and the paperwork simply swaps ends. On the LA side that means the origin building’s certificate of insurance and whichever agency posts your signs, whether that is LADOT, Santa Monica or Beverly Hills. On the DC side it means the $50 DDOT Emergency No Parking permit through the TOPS portal, signs up 72 hours ahead in residential zones, and a building COI if your new place asks for one. The drive is the same four to six days of legal wheel time, so the honest delivery conversation runs the same in both directions. If you are landing inside the District rather than the suburbs, our DC movers page covers the local side of arrival. Ask about eastbound dates when you request a quote, because scheduling is what moves the price on a run this long.
Frequently Asked Questions
Our estimate ranges on this lane run $2,700 to $4,300 for a studio, $3,400 to $5,700 for a one-bedroom, $4,800 to $7,600 for a two-bedroom, $5,900 to $9,200 for a three-bedroom, and $6,900 to $12,000 for four bedrooms and up. Those are estimates for a dedicated truck, not binding quotes. For outside context, moveBuddha’s sample of live quotes on this route (updated 31 August 2026) puts full-service studio and one-bedroom moves at $2,647 to $6,333, and four-bedroom-plus at $7,753 to $13,491.
The road distance is about 2,669 miles, roughly 39 hours of nonstop driving in a car. A truck cannot do it in one push. Federal hours-of-service rules allow 11 driving hours inside a 14-hour on-duty window, then 10 consecutive hours off, plus a 30-minute break after 8 hours at the wheel. That puts the drive alone at four to six days for a single driver, before loading, unloading or weather. We give you a delivery date at booking rather than a window.
Because they are not selling the same thing. Three days needs a two-driver team alternating so the truck never stops, the most expensive way to run the lane. A seven-to-twenty-one-day window means your goods share a trailer and leave when the load fills, the cheapest. A dedicated single-driver truck, which our ranges assume, sits in between. Before comparing two prices here, find out which of the three you are being quoted.
Usually, and which one depends on who owns your street. In the City of Los Angeles, LADOT posts temporary no-parking signs at actual cost under LAMC 80.08.7 and publishes no price, so it is quoted per job through its Special Traffic Control Division, (213) 485-2298. Separately, LAMC 80.69.4 bars any vehicle over 22 feet long or 84 inches tall from parking on a posted street between 2 and 6 a.m. Surrounding cities run their own systems: Santa Monica charges $107.75 plus $2.04 per sign with a police inspection first, Beverly Hills $8.10 per sign posted 72 hours ahead. We sort out the right agency before move day.
January and February. Peak season runs May through September, when more than 60% of American moves happen and rates sit 20% to 30% above the off-season. The last three days of any month carry a similar premium as leases turn over. A Tuesday through Thursday date mid-month is the cheapest slot without changing the season. (Seasonal figures: moveBuddha peak-season analysis, updated 7 April 2026.)
Shipping is usually the saner call over 2,669 miles, and worth booking directly rather than through your mover, who is brokering it either way. Published open-carrier prices for this route in 2026 run roughly $1,225 to $1,475 (Sherpa, July 2026) and $1,646 to $2,418 (FreightWaves, 12 August 2026), with 7 to 15 days in transit. Enclosed transport costs more, with published estimates of the premium ranging from 30% to nearly double, so get it quoted. One inversion to plan around: January is the cheapest month to move a household and among the pricier ones to ship a car.
