About Our DC to New York Moving Company
AT Movers is a family-owned Rockville mover that takes homes from Washington DC to New York City, a 225-mile run, for flat rates from $1,900 to $5,050 and up. New York is our busiest long-distance route. Our crews, all W-2 employees, drive it 3+ times a week, and we are the carrier on record (USDOT #3455533, MC #1126253), with no broker in between.
Why does the table start at $1,900? Even a studio fills a whole day for two movers and a truck. The drive up I-95 and the New Jersey Turnpike takes about 5 hours each way. Add loading, unloading and the trip back to our Rockville lot, and the smallest move comes to 12 to 13 hours of crew and truck time. Fuel and every toll are inside the flat rate, and nothing is added at delivery.
Timing depends on your building. Load early, and a small move can be at your new place that afternoon, if the building takes afternoon move-ins. Many New York co-ops and condos stop moves at 4 or 5 p.m. on weekdays, so bigger loads and early-cutoff buildings get delivered the next morning, inside the building’s window.
Before move day we send your New York building its certificate of insurance, free, usually within one business day, and tell you what to book at each end: no-parking signs on your DC street if it needs them, the freight elevator in New York. Every toll on the way is inside the flat rate: the Baltimore harbor tunnel, the I-95 toll roads in Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey, the Hudson River crossing, and the MTA congestion toll when we deliver in Manhattan below 60th Street.

Federal law gives you two options on every interstate move: Released-Value Protection (60¢ per pound per article) is included at no charge, and Full-Value Protection is available for the declared value of your shipment. We walk you through both in writing before move day, along with the FMCSA’s “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move” booklet every interstate mover is required to provide.
Closing dates don’t line up? We can hold your shipment securely between homes — ask your coordinator about short-term storage when you book.

Permits, Parking & Building Access
Loading in DC, Maryland & Virginia
If your DC street needs reserved curb space, the District requires an Emergency No Parking permit from DDOT — $50 through the TOPS portal, with signs posted 72 hours ahead on unmetered blocks (24 hours on metered ones). We tell you exactly what to order and when, or coordinate the signage with your building.
Delivering in New York City
New York gives a moving truck no way to hold the curb. NYC DOT issues no permits for reserving street space for commercial vehicles, so the truck uses a truck loading zone or a legal spot on your block. Outside Midtown a commercial vehicle may double park for up to 20 minutes while it loads, and only when no space is free. In Midtown, 14th to 60th Street, double parking is banned from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Saturday, and a truck may stand no more than 3 hours on one block.
Trucks must stay on the city’s designated truck routes until the turn nearest your block. The parkways are closed to them, the FDR, the Henry Hudson and the Belt among others, with stone bridges as low as 6 feet 11 inches. The Brooklyn Bridge is closed to trucks too, so a move to Brooklyn Heights or DUMBO crosses the river on another bridge or tunnel. Manhattan at or below 60th Street, from the Financial District to Midtown, is inside the MTA congestion zone.
Your building sets the rest. Building rules on the Upper West Side, the Upper East Side and in Forest Hills allow moves on weekdays only, roughly 9 a.m. to 4 or 5 p.m., want 48 hours to 5 working days of notice, and ask for a certificate of insurance naming the building and its managing agent. One Upper West Side condo asks movers for $2 million in general liability, which is what we carry. Moving to Hoboken instead? The city sells temporary no-parking signs for moving trucks; order them 7 days ahead in person or 10 online.
