Washington DC to Tampa Bay
About Our DC to Tampa Moving Company
AT Movers is a family-owned company based in Rockville, Maryland, running a fleet of 26-foot box trucks and sprinter crews out of the DMV. Washington DC to Tampa is one of the longest lanes we run, and the distance changes the job in ways a short hop up I-95 never does.
It is about 902 miles from DC to Tampa Bay. The direct line runs south on I-95 past Richmond, Fayetteville and Florence, crosses into Florida at Jacksonville, then cuts west on I-10 and turns down I-75 through Lake City, Gainesville and Ocala before I-275 or I-4 brings the truck into the city. Call it 13 to 14 hours of driving. Federal hours-of-service rules cap a driver at 11 hours behind the wheel in a duty day, which makes a single-driver run a two-day trip by law rather than by preference. Two-driver teams can compress it to an overnight when your date demands it.
This corridor also has almost no tolls, which is worth knowing before you compare quotes. The I-95 mainline is free through Virginia, the Carolinas and Georgia. Trucks over two axles cannot use Virginia’s Express Lanes anyway, and the routing into Tampa never needs Florida’s Turnpike. On our northeast lanes a single river crossing costs more than the entire drive to Florida.
Most of what we load on this run is federal and contractor households moving to Hillsborough and Pinellas counties. After that it is retirees who are finished with DC winters, plus a steady number of remote workers who did the rent arithmetic and decided. Census migration tables line up with what our schedule looks like: Virginia and Maryland each send many times more households to Florida than the District itself does, and most of our Tampa loads start in the suburbs.
We hold USDOT #3455533 and MC #1126253 with full interstate household goods authority. We do not broker jobs out, and we do not pool your shipment with other freight. See our other long-distance routes, including DC to Miami if you are still choosing a Florida city.

What’s Included
What’s Included — and How You’re Protected
An experienced W-2 crew and a dedicated 26-ft truck — your shipment never shares a trailer or waits for a freight consolidation window. You book us, you get us.
Moving blankets, shrink wrap, floor and door-frame protection, plus disassembly and reassembly of furniture that needs it — all part of the rate, not add-ons.
Every road-related charge is built into your flat rate: fuel, mileage, and all tolls along the corridor.
This route has no mandatory tolls. The I-95, I-10 and I-75 line into Tampa never touches Florida's Turnpike, and if a crew takes the Selmon or Veterans expressway to reach your neighborhood, those few dollars are already inside your flat rate.
AT Movers operates under USDOT #3455533 · MC #1126253 with full interstate household-goods authority — verify us on the FMCSA carrier snapshot or the FMCSA’s Protect Your Move mover search. We carry $2 million in general liability, the level strict buildings ask for on certificates of insurance.
Federal law gives you two options on every interstate move: Released-Value Protection (60¢ per pound per article) is included at no charge, and Full-Value Protection is available for the declared value of your shipment. We walk you through both in writing before move day, along with the FMCSA’s “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move” booklet every interstate mover is required to provide.
Closing dates don’t line up? We can hold your shipment securely between homes — ask your coordinator about short-term storage when you book.

Route Logistics
Permits, Parking & Building Access
Loading in DC, Maryland & Virginia
If your DC street needs reserved curb space, the District requires an Emergency No Parking permit from DDOT — $50 through the TOPS portal, with signs posted 72 hours ahead on unmetered blocks (24 hours on metered ones). We tell you exactly what to order and when, or coordinate the signage with your building.

Delivering in Tampa
Tampa is not one jurisdiction, which matters on move day. A Hyde Park or Channel District address is City of Tampa. Much of Brandon, Riverview and Town ‘n’ Country is unincorporated Hillsborough County, with its own rules and fees.
Curb space. The city issues no moving permit. You rent an on-street space from the Tampa Parking Division with 72 hours (three business days) of notice, at $20 per space per day, $30 downtown, or $10 for an unmetered space. County addresses go through Hillsborough County’s Temporary Traffic Control permit instead: $50 base plus $150 per closed collector or arterial lane, filed 30 days out.
Restricted truck streets. Tampa’s truck route ordinance keeps regulated trucks off four segments serving Ybor City and the Channel District: East 4th Avenue, East 7th Avenue, North 21st Street and North 22nd Street. Delivery to an address off the network is still legal, but the driver has to take the shortest possible path and carry paperwork showing the destination. The city truck route map has the full network, and we plan the approach before the truck leaves Maryland.
Condo and association rules. These are set building by building, and they are strict. One Bayshore Boulevard association allows moves only 8am to 5pm on weekdays, never weekends or holidays, wants 24 hours of notice, holds a refundable $250 deposit and bans staging in hallways. Some buildings also ask for a certificate of insurance naming the association. Send us your move-in packet and we file to their spec at no charge.
Why Choose AT Movers for a DC to Tampa Move
902 Miles, No Toll Surprises
The DC to Tampa run never needs Florida's Turnpike, and trucks over two axles cannot use Virginia's Express Lanes anyway. You will not find a toll line added after delivery.
We Read Your Association Rules First
Tampa towers and Bayshore associations set their own move windows, deposits and insurance limits. We collect the packet and file to their spec before move day, instead of learning the rules at the loading dock.
Ybor and Channel District Truck Routes
Four street segments in Tampa are closed to regulated trucks. We plan the legal approach and the paperwork the driver has to carry before the truck leaves Maryland.
Hurricane Season Contingency
From June through November we build weather slack into Florida delivery dates and tell you the fallback plan when you book, instead of calling you from the road.
Family-Owned, Not a Broker
You get our truck, our W-2 crew, and one coordinator from the quote through the final walkthrough. We never hand your shipment to another carrier or pool it with freight.
Licensed Interstate Carrier
USDOT #3455533 and MC #1126253 with full household goods authority, $2 million general liability, and released value coverage included at no charge.

How It Works
How Your DC to Tampa Move Will Go
What a two-day run to Tampa Bay actually looks like.

Planning & Paperwork
Start with the online estimate or call (240) 701-5507. A coordinator confirms your inventory by video or photo walkthrough and locks a flat rate. Then we collect the paperwork both ends need: DDOT signage on the DC side, and on the Tampa side your association’s move-in packet, elevator window and certificate of insurance, plus a Parking Division space rental if your street has meters. That rental needs three business days, so we file early. Booking two to four weeks out secures a date, and from June through November we talk through the weather fallback before you sign.

Packing & Loading
The crew arrives inside your morning window, wraps furniture in blankets and shrink wrap, protects floors and door frames, disassembles what needs it, and inventories every item onto a dedicated 26-foot truck. We do not pool it with anyone else’s shipment. A load facing 900 miles gets strapped and decked properly, which takes longer than a local job and is the reason things arrive intact. Full or partial packing is available if you would rather not box anything. Florida also regulates plants coming across state lines, so ask us before you pack them.

Transit & Delivery
Your shipment leaves the same day it loads. A single driver runs it in two days under federal hours-of-service limits, and a two-driver team can deliver next day when the schedule calls for it. Most Tampa deliveries land on day two or three, inside the weekday window your building confirmed. The same crew unloads, reassembles furniture, places boxes by room label, removes the packing debris, and walks the inventory with you before anyone signs. We call with the driver’s ETA the evening before rather than handing you a four-hour window on the day.
The Other Direction
Moving from Tampa to DC? We Run That Direction Too
Northbound is a real flow on this lane. Census migration tables show Florida sending roughly 24,800 households to Virginia and 9,400 to Maryland in a single year, and some of those are ours. The logistics flip. On the Tampa end we work inside your association’s weekday move window and file whatever certificate of insurance it asks for. On the DC end we tell you when to order the $50 DDOT Emergency No Parking permit and handle the signage coordination with your building. Transit is the same two to three days, and the flat rate prices out the same in either direction. If you are landing in the District itself, our DC movers page covers the local side. Frequently Asked Questions
Recent AT Movers flat rates on this lane: studios $1,900 to $2,400, one-bedrooms $2,800 to $3,800, two-bedrooms $3,600 to $4,800, three-bedrooms $4,800 to $6,800, and four or more bedrooms $6,800 to $9,200. These are estimates; your binding quote depends on inventory, building access and dates. Independent data agrees on the shape. moveBuddha, working from 764 real quotes on this exact route between May and July 2026, puts full-service 2-3 bedroom moves at $3,035 to $7,020 and 4+ bedrooms at $4,772 to $9,909, with a median 3-bedroom cost of $5,600.
Plan on two to three days door to door. The drive is about 902 miles, roughly 13 to 14 hours of wheel time, and federal hours-of-service rules cap a driver at 11 hours of driving per duty day. That makes a single-driver run a two-day trip as a matter of law, so treat any next-day promise on a 900-mile lane with suspicion unless two drivers are in the cab. We offer that team-driver option when a date is tight. Either way you avoid the 5 to 7 day windows shared-freight carriers quote here, because your shipment rides its own dedicated truck.
Frequently, and it is the most common reason a Florida delivery date has to shift. Rules are set building by building rather than city-wide, so the only safe answer is to read your own move-in packet early. As an example of how strict they get, one Bayshore Boulevard association permits move-ins and move-outs only between 8am and 5pm Monday through Friday, never on weekends or holidays, requires 24 hours of notice to the management office, holds a refundable $250 security deposit, and bans staging items in hallways or atriums. Oversized furniture sometimes has to come in over a balcony by prior arrangement. Send us the packet as soon as your building issues it and we schedule around the window management confirms.
People do it constantly and it is manageable with planning. NOAA’s National Hurricane Center puts the Atlantic season from June 1 to November 30, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October and a statistical peak around September 10. That overlaps the busiest moving months, so the real risk is not damage in transit but a delivery date that has to move with a storm track. We build slack into Florida dates in that window and agree the fallback at booking. Worth checking before you sign anything: Hillsborough County expanded its evacuation zones for the 2026 season, putting parts of New Tampa into Zone E, and every manufactured home sits in Zone A regardless of location. The county’s evacuation lookup tool gives you the zone for a specific address.
Tampa has no residential moving permit like the District’s. Instead the City of Tampa Parking Division rents you the curb: an on-street parking space rental filed at least 72 hours (three business days) ahead, at $20 per space per day, $30 downtown, or $10 a day for an unmetered space, with Parking Enforcement bagging and unbagging the meters. If your address sits in unincorporated Hillsborough County instead, closing a lane runs through the county’s Temporary Traffic Control permit at $50 plus $150 per closed lane, filed 30 days out. We tell you which applies and what to order. On the DC end, our parking permit guide walks through the DDOT side.
October through March. Summer is the expensive half of the calendar here: HireAHelper’s 2026 migration report, built on nearly 15 million adult moves, found 52% of US moves fall between May and August, with August the most active migration month of 2025 across the Southeast. Off-peak Florida dates price well below that stretch. Within any month a midweek date beats a Saturday, and mid-month beats the month-end rush. A late autumn or winter move also sidesteps hurricane season altogether, which for some people is worth more than the discount.
On the two biggest lines, generally yes. Florida levies no state income tax at all, while the District, Maryland and Virginia all tax income, and housing costs less in the Tampa market than in the DC metro. Most customers on this lane have run that math before they call us. One cost that catches DC transplants off guard: windstorm and flood insurance in a coastal county can be a serious annual line item, and the premium swings hard on the specific address and its evacuation zone, so price it on the actual property before you commit. Our guide to the legal steps when moving to a new state covers the license, registration and residency paperwork Florida expects.
