Moving Company in Alexandria, VA

Alexandria is its own city. It belongs to no county, so curb space, parking signs and truck rules inside the city line come from City Hall and the City Code, not from Fairfax County. Plenty of “Alexandria, VA” mailing addresses sit outside the City, though. Kingstowne, Rose Hill, Huntington, Belle Haven and the Mount Vernon side of Route 1 are all Fairfax County. If that is you, the rules on our Springfield page fit your street better than this one.

Inside the City, the housing splits two ways. The Census counts 36 percent of Alexandria’s homes in buildings of 50 units or more: the high-rises along Seminary Road, the Landmark and Van Dorn towers that the City’s own plan says locals call “condo canyon”, and the newer apartment buildings around Carlyle and Potomac Yard. Another 21 percent are rowhouses and townhouses, from the small row houses of Parker-Gray, most built after 1870, to Warwick Village in Del Ray, the 1940s two-level units at Parkfairfax and the townhomes at Cameron Station. Detached houses are only 14 percent, among them the bungalows and Colonial Revival houses of Rosemont.

Most of the City rents: 58 percent of occupied homes, by the 2024 Census estimate, and about one resident in five lived somewhere else a year earlier. A lot of that turnover follows federal work. The Patent and Trademark Office and the National Science Foundation share the Carlyle campus on Dulany Street, HUD announced its headquarters move to Eisenhower Avenue, and Virginia Tech’s graduate campus opened at North Potomac Yard in 2025.

A truck gets around on Route 1, which the City renamed Richmond Highway in 2019, plus Duke Street, King Street, I-395 and the Beltway. Five Metro stations sit inside the City: King St-Old Town, Braddock Road, Eisenhower Avenue, Van Dorn Street and Potomac Yard, which opened in 2023.

What’s In the Rate

What Your Hourly Rate Includes and How You’re Protected

An experienced W-2 crew, a 26-ft box truck, and the protective gear (moving blankets, protective tools, hand trucks and dollies) are all part of the hourly rate, along with gas, tolls and mileage. We are the movers, not a broker reselling your job.

Local moves bill by the hour with a two-hour minimum, and travel time is billed in 30-minute increments. Your written estimate spells out the hourly rate, the expected hours, and the travel charge before move day. The number you see is the number you plan around.

Alexandria is about 30 miles from our Rockville lot by the Beltway, so a job here usually carries about an hour of truck time each way. The truck bills at your crew's hourly rate for that drive only, in 30-minute steps, and that number shows up in writing before you commit.

Moving blankets, shrink wrap, floor and door-frame protection, plus disassembly and reassembly of furniture that needs it, all included in the rate rather than sold as add-ons.

Parking, Permits & Building Access in Alexandria

Parking & permits in Alexandria

The City runs a real permit for this, and moving is one of the reasons it lists. It is called Temporary Reserved Parking. You can reserve up to five spaces of about 20 feet each, which is enough curb for a box truck plus room to work the ramp. The City charges $30 per space per day on a plain street and $40 per meter per day on a metered one, plus $10 per day for each No Parking sign it has to cover.

The request has to be in by 12 noon, three full business days before the move, weekends and holidays not counted. For a Saturday or Sunday move that means noon on Tuesday. The City does not accept late requests, and it refunds only if the signs were never posted. You apply online through APEX, the City’s permit system, or in person at 4850 Mark Center Drive.

Does every block need it? No. City Code section 10-4-6 keeps trucks and commercial vehicles off residential streets, with one exception: up to eight hours in any 24 while the truck is being loaded or unloaded. That exception does not beat a posted sign. Where a block has meters, a no-parking zone or a permit-parking time limit, reserve the spaces. When you send your address, we tell you which kind of block you are on and how many spaces to ask for.

Managed buildings across the DMV often require a certificate of insurance before crews can load. We carry $2M in general liability and send your building’s COI before move day.

Towers, Rowhouses and Permit Districts in Alexandria

We looked for published move-in rules from Alexandria’s big apartment and condo buildings and found none. Southern Towers on Seminary Road, Carlyle Place across from the Eisenhower Metro and the condo towers of Landmark and Van Dorn keep whatever rules they have with their management offices. So we ask. Tell us the building when you book and we call management for the elevator window, the loading door and any certificate of insurance wording. We send the certificate of insurance to that wording before move day.

Old Town and many blocks near Metro stations sit in residential permit parking districts, created in 1979. Parking there is limited to two or three hours during the posted times unless the car shows the district’s permit, and the hours change block by block. In District 12, cars without a permit cannot park at all from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. The City publishes no exemption for a moving truck in these districts, so on those blocks the reserved spaces above are the safe answer.

Two more rules come up on Old Town moves. The City Code bans trucks on about two dozen named streets and blocks, including the 200 block of South Fayette Street and the 300 and 400 blocks of North Payne, but the ban does not apply to a truck making a delivery or pickup on that block. And a POD, moving trailer or packing crate on the street needs its own right-of-way permit from Transportation and Environmental Services, applied for five business days ahead, with flashing barricades at each end, 20 feet of clearance from a crosswalk or stop line and liability insurance that names the City.

Why Choose AT Movers in Alexandria

We Flag the Parking Deadline at Your Quote

The City wants reserved-parking requests by noon three business days out, with no late requests. We check your block when you book, so a Monday move does not find out about it on Friday.

Crews for Elevators and Stairs Alike

More than a third of Alexandria homes are in buildings of 50 units or more, and a fifth are rowhouses and townhouses. We size the crew and pad the job for the one you live in: an elevator wait in Carlyle or a tight turn in Parker-Gray.

We Come In by the Beltway, Not the Parkway

Commercial vehicles need a National Park Service permit to drive the George Washington Memorial Parkway, and NPS turns it down when another route exists. So we plan your arrival on I-495, I-395 and Route 1, the roads a truck is allowed on.

The Drive Is on Your Estimate

Our lot is in Rockville, about 30 miles north. The truck's time each way is written into your quote in the same 30-minute steps we bill, so the total you plan around already includes it.

Our Own Crews Show Up

The people at your door are AT Movers employees on W-2, working from a fleet of 26-foot box trucks and sprinter crews. We do not broker Alexandria jobs to another company.

Numbers You Can Look Up

Federal registration USDOT #3455533 and MC #1126253, plus $2 million of liability insurance. A Carlyle or West End building that asks for a COI gets one written to its own wording.

Real Client Feedback

Customer Reviews

5 stars

“Just had a great experience with AT movers! Artem and his team made it easy from start to finish for my DC to Alexandria move. First I had to change the timing of the move. They were very accommodating. Then there were some logistical challenges at my apartment in Navy Yard due to elevator issues. This made the move a bit more difficult but Berik and the team were true professionals. They even sent an additional person to help unload!! Everything was handled with care, had great conversation, they were on time and moved quickly. I will be using AT Movers again for my next move. Prices are reasonable as well. Highly recommend!”

How It Works

How Your Alexandria Move Will Go

How an Alexandria move runs, start to finish

AT Movers coordinator planning a local move

Planning & Estimate

First we pin down whose street it is. An Alexandria mailing address can be City or Fairfax County, and the parking rules change at that line. Inside the City we check for meters, permit-parking signs and the restricted-truck blocks, and we tell you if the reserved-parking request has to go in and by which day. If you are in a tower, we get the elevator window and the insurance wording from management. Then we send the arrival window, the crew size and a written estimate that already counts the truck’s travel.

AT Movers crew packing and loading furniture onto a truck

Packing & Loading

The crew pads the elevator or the stair rail before the first piece moves, wraps furniture in blankets and takes apart what will not clear a doorway. In a high-rise we stage loads by the freight elevator so the car does not sit waiting on us. In an older Old Town or Parker-Gray house we clear the top floor first and work the stairs in order, so nothing is carried twice.

AT Movers truck arrived at the new home

Drive & Unload

Across town, the drive is usually short: Del Ray to the West End is Route 1 and Duke Street, Old Town to Potomac Yard is a few minutes up Richmond Highway. The crew stays off the George Washington Memorial Parkway, which needs a Park Service permit for commercial vehicles. At the new place we reassemble what we took apart and put boxes in the rooms their labels name. The truck’s drive back to Rockville bills in the same 30-minute steps shown on your estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our crews cost $150 an hour for two movers, $180 for three and $220 for four, with a two-hour minimum. The truck bills at the same hourly rate for the drive from our Rockville lot and back, about two hours in total for Alexandria. Put together, an Alexandria move usually comes to $600 to $850 for a studio, $700 to $1,050 for a one-bedroom, $1,150 to $1,550 for two bedrooms, $1,550 to $2,300 for three and $2,300 to $2,850 for four. Those are estimates. Every fee is listed on our pricing page.

Only on some blocks, but you have to decide early. The City’s Temporary Reserved Parking covers moves: up to five spaces, $30 a day each on a plain street or $40 a day per meter, plus $10 a day per covered sign. The request must reach the City by noon three full business days before the move. On a residential street with no posted limits, City Code allows a truck up to eight hours a day while loading. On metered or permit-parking blocks, reserve the spaces.

Yes. Kingstowne, Rose Hill, Huntington, Belle Haven and much of the Route 1 corridor south of the City have Alexandria mailing addresses but are Fairfax County. The City’s reserved-parking program does not reach them, and Fairfax County has no moving-truck curb permit at all. County and VDOT rules apply there instead, and our Springfield page covers them. Tell us your address and we will tell you which side of the line you are on.

For a full apartment or house, two to three weeks is comfortable, and more at the end of the month. Two deadlines drive it. The City’s reserved-parking request has to be in by noon three full business days before the date, and building managers usually want the elevator booked and the insurance certificate in hand first. For a few items or a single room, we can often move sooner. See our same-day moving page.

Only with a City right-of-way permit. You apply five business days ahead with a drawing of where the container goes. It needs flashing barricades at each end, it has to sit at least 20 feet from a crosswalk or stop line, and you need liability insurance that names the City. A driveway, if you have one, avoids all of that. With a moving crew there is nothing to leave on the street overnight.

Ask for the USDOT number and look it up with the federal FMCSA mover search. It shows whether the company is registered to move household goods. Ours is USDOT #3455533, MC #1126253. Be wary of a mover that will not give you a number to check. Ours lists the rate, how many hours we expect and the truck’s travel time, in writing, before you book.

Yes, with our own crews, not a broker. A move to another state is priced as a job, not by the hour, and our long-distance moving page explains how. If you are heading south, our DC to Richmond page covers the I-95 run. Moving a room or a few pieces across town? Our small-move guide covers it.
